1. I remember buying this special in 1980, and still have it. I had gone all the way from England to California, to see the movie immediately on its US release. I spent the entire summer holiday between college terms out in the USA, and saw the movie several times. I recall some American friends dragged me along to see Stanley Kubrick’s ‘The Shining’, which had just gone on general release (and which I hated!), as ‘Empire’ wasn’t being released until a couple of weeks after I arrived in Los Angeles. In America I also bought the paperback novelisation of the film, and Alan Arnold’s book ‘Once upon a Galaxy’ about the making of the picture. ‘Empire’ was even better than ‘Star Wars’ had been, and was by far the best of the three original movies, thanks mainly to its director, Irv Kershner.
